I think Ralph Peters is one of the best writers of historical fiction today. His only rival would be Bernard Cornwell. Peters has done a masterful job of recreating the Civil War in the eastern theater. He is at his best in describing the trial of common everyday soldiers. I do not agree with his assessments of Meade and Lee. He makes Meade out to be the greatest general of all time. Yes, Meade deserves more credit than what he has received. He was a rock solid general but not in the category of Lee or Grant. Also,  he is quite harsh on Lee for casualties and not giving up the fight earlier.  Hindsight makes geniuses of us all. Despite this I highly recommend any of Peter's novels.
